Star Wars: Bloodline - Claudia Gray

Another good Star Wars book in a largely disappointing series. Bloodline is set between the original film trilogy and the newest one. In my opinion, it should have been the film that relaunched the franchise instead of J. J. Abrams' garbled The Force Awakens. On Hosnian Prime, the seat of the New Republic, the Senate is divided by the bickering of two opposing factions, the Populists and Centrists. As figurehead of the Populist faction, Princess Leia has grown weary of the ineffective government and seeks to retire. However, after becoming embroiled in a criminal cartel investigation, she realises her influence and position in the Senate have become more valuable than ever. Looming ever present over Leia's political career is the secret that she is Darth Vader's daughter, a fact not even her son has been made aware of.

This was one of the books I was not looking forward to, having little interest in the baby politics of the Star Wars universe, but my expectations were happily subverted. Claudia Gray's in-between novel is a more valuable addition to the Star Wars universe than Chuck Wendig's embarrassingly poor Aftermath trilogy. Not only is the story more compelling and the characters better realised, but Gray's writing is far superior. The novel fills in a lot of gaps about the post Empire political climate whilst introducing far more likeable new characters. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in making more sense of the new films, particularly of the events that led to the rise of the First Order and Resistance. The closest thing to a page turner so far.
