Star Wars: Dark Disciple - Christie Golden

Dark Disciple picks up where the cancelled Clone Wars TV series left off, following the adventures of the prequel heroes and villains in their war for galactic control. After Count Dooku kills a lot of innocent refugees, the Jedi Council decides that enough is enough and resorts to drastic measures. They decide to assassinate the Sith lord, calling upon happy-go-lucky Jedi Quinlan Vos to attempt the mission. He is instructed to team up with Asajj Ventress, a former apprentice of Dooku's who turned away from the dark side after he destroyed her home world. Both eager to kill the count for different reasons, the Jedi and former Sith make for an unlikely alliance. As with the previous book, we know that the assassination mission is doomed to failure because we already know how Dooku meets his end. The decision to hinge these plots on a doomed endeavour seems like an odd decision to me.

Christie Golden is the first female writer in the new canon and disappointingly decided to write a trite romance with Vos and Ventress. The writing is rather bad, with some extremely angst-ridden dialogue between tough-as-nails Asajj Ventress, and the annoying, two-dimensional Quinlan. Golden admits to bringing the baggage of a painful breakup into her writing, which would certainly explain a lot of the drama the reader is subjected to. Particularly annoying was the inclusion of famous bounty hunters such as Boba and Bossk, who are brought in for no other reason than to surprise fans. Like many of the other Star Wars writers, Golden does not waste time writing for non-Star Wars fans, so familiarity with the franchise is a must. Now that the Clone Wars has been resurrected, this whole plot may eventually become void.
